Yule is Come 06:18
Refrain: Yule is come, now beat the drum And light the solstice flame Tonight we'll raise a hymn of praise For the sun returns again! Hail to Yule, the longest night Of all the turning year Awake the resurrecting light That banishes despair For now the tide will start to turn And night will yield to day And the waning year will shed its skin And cast the dark away So pile the bonfire, join the dance And raise your voices high Old winter can no more advance its hold on earth and sky For soon the sap will rise again The mute once more will sing And the weary heart will wake anew To the promise of the spring

The winter wind is blowing strong The frost is on the tree The night intones its dreary song O'er meadow wood and sea But the fire is bright, and our delight Waits not for summer's sun We'll feast and dance and sing this night Til our revelries are done Refrain: So play your pipes so sweet, my lad And lassie, sing your tune And bring us ale to make us glad For the year is born anew For the year is born anew The world has long lain in the grip Of winter's icy fist Out of doors the cold doth nip The hides of man and beast But here within, the blazing fire Will keep our blood from chill And the table piled with such good fare Will keep our bellies full Now winter keeps us from the fields The plow it rusty lies The earth no grain or fruit will yield While the story wind doth bide But soon the ewe will have her lamp And the spring buds they will form And Johnny and his Mary Anne Once more the woods will roam
5.
Bring us in no brownie bread, for that is made of bran, Nor bring us in no white bread, there therein is no gain; Refrain: But bring us in good ale, bring us in good ale For our blessed Lady’s sake, bring us in good ale. Bring us in no bacon, for that is passing fat, But bring us in good ale, and give us enough of that; Bring us in no mutton, for that is often lean, Nor bring us in no tripes, for they be seldom clean; Bring us in no eggies, for there are many shells, But bring us in good ale, and give us nothing else; Bring us in no butter, for therein are many hairs; Nor bring us in no pig's flesh, for that will make us boars; Bring us in no puddings, for therein is all Goat's blood; Nor bring us in no venison, for that is not for our good Bring us in no capon's flesh, for that is often dear; Nor bring us in no duck's flesh, for they slobber in the mere;

In the bleak heart of winter when the icy wind made moan And the world lay a-dying beneath a sky of stone The Mother bore her Child as midnight drew nigh And she sang to her baby a soft lullaby She sang though the green wood lay butchered and waste Thought her meadows and groves were all gone without trace She sang though the sea lay plundered and bare Though her heart was so heavy with longing and care Lullay my dear one, my tiny child of earth How fragile, how lovely this moment of thy birth Are there none to praise your coming, to guard your tender light? None to shelter your garden from ravage and blight? So the Mother sang softly as the midnight hour passed by And she grieved for the dark world that knew not how to thrive That knew not how to love this gift she freely gave Or to tend its frail blooming in field and wood and wave Lullay my dear one, my little flame of earth \Who will watch o'er your growing, and cherish your worth? Lullay my darling, my little child of Time, So precious, so fleeting, this blossom of mine

The old year now away is fled, The new year it is entered; Then let us all our wrongs down tread, And joyfully all appear. Let's merry be this day And let us now both sport and play Hang1 sorrow, let's cast care away God send us a happpy new year! And now with New-Year's gifts each friend Unto each other they do send; God grant we may our lives amend, And that truth may appear. Now like the snake cast off your skin Of troubled thoughts towards your kin, And to amend this new year begin: God send us a happy new year! And now let all the company In friendly manner all agree, For we are here welcome all may see Unto this jolly good cheer. I thanke my master and my dame, The which are founders of the same, To eat and drink now is no shame: God send us a happy new year! Come lads and lasses every one, Jack, Tom, Dick, Bessie, Mary and Joan, Let's cut the meat up unto the bone, For welcome you need not fear! And here for good liquor we shall not lack, It will whet my brains and strengthen my back; This jolly good cheer it must go to wrack: God send us a happy new year! Come, give's more liquor when I do call, I'll drink to each one in this hall, I hope that so loud I must not bawl, So unto me lend an ear. Good fortune to my master send, And to our dame which is our friend, Lord bless us all, and so I end: God send us a happy new year!

My joy, my love, my darling thou My treasure new, my rapture thou My comely, beauteous babe art thou How blessed am I to tend to thee Halleluia White sun of hope and light art thou Of love, the heart and eye art thou Though but a tender babe I bow In heavenly rapture unto thee

Cast the old year into the flame Cast the dust of the year to the flame All hope is reborn in the light Hope is reborn in the light

about

Celebrate the yearly return of the light with Jaiya's album of original and traditional songs dedicated to the Winter Solstice.

Jaiya's sound is a blend of Celtic, Early Music, Jazz and Worldbeat influences. Soaring vocal harmonies, lyric harp and haunting penny whistle combine with the earthy tones of accordion and drums to bring us music that speaks of the land and its seasons.

This album is dedicated to both the people and the spirit of Mayne Island. We are grateful for the warmth and vitality of our small island community, and for the wild beauty of the landscape which inspires and sustains us.
